Recent reads

Linking up with Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Quick Lit – quick reviews of books recently read.

All You Need to be Impossibly French by Helena Frith Powell – a fun, easy read on one of my pet topics: la femme francaise.

Nobody’s Child by Christina Noble – I became interested in Noble after watching the movie based on her life (free now for Amazon Prime members!). This book (like the movie) is alternately inspiring, shocking, sad and laugh-out-loud funny. There need to be more people like Christina Noble in the world.

Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar, and Survival by T. S. Wiley

How chronic sleep deprivation (and its incestuous cousin, artificial lighting) impacts our health. This is my second time reading this book. Mostly, I was looking for talking points to help my kids understand why we have the rule of “no screens an hour before bed” in our home. The book is a little “out there” in its style and is rather hard to read (one of the biggest criticisms in the Amazon reviews, with good reason), and I don’t agree with all the Paleo man rhetoric, but it has enough science underpinning it to make it a compelling read. Sleep deprivation leads to sugar cravings which leads to overweight and depression, among other problems.
