Misfits Market Review (and a coupon code)

Are you a fan of grocery delivery services? I’ve been using InstaCart for years and love it. I’ve also experimented with another: Misfits. Here’s my Misfits market review, along with a coupon code for you to use if you’d like to try it.

What is Misfits market?

Misfits Market offers seasonal, organic produce and claims its prices are up to 40% off grocery stores. The discount is due to their relationship with farmers, who offer them food that might not make the cut otherwise, due to inconsistent size, or being just plain funny-looking. Misfits offers over 400 grocery items (including fruit, veggies, pantry, beverages, and household products).

How Does Misfits Work?

When you log in to your account, you’ll see you have a 3-day shopping window to pick your items before your order goes through. As you can see in the image above, your window is a few days before the order is processed. If you don’t reach the order minimum of $30, they skip your order. There are no automated charges and no annual fee. Misfits delivers 7 days a week, and you can choose your preferred delivery day.

This box was a little ripped and wet. One of the Biodrain cold packs had leaked. Thankfully, it’s filled with a non-toxic liquid.

Is There a Commitment with Misfits?

Nope! It’s SIMPLE to cancel or skip Misfits deliveries. This is important to me. It’s so annoying to jump through hoops to cancel a subscription, or to have “surprise!” automated charges.

You get a convenient reminder email when it’s time to “build your box”, when it’s shipped and then delivered, etc. Your card won’t be charged unless you order.

Does Misfits Save You Money?

Here’s a quick price comparison. On the left side is the current Instacart price for Aldi. The right side shows the Misfits price (italicized).

What I Don’t Love About Misfits

The layers of packaging are an issue. The order comes in a large box, which is to be expected. But, it also has lots of padding and other packaging inside. The “biofreeze” cold packs are at least reusable, and you can safely pour the liquid contents into the trash or drain if you don’t want to reuse them. Most items are individually wrapped or boxed, and these packages are compostable or recyclable.

My family is moving in a few weeks. We can reuse the boxes, then gift them to another person once we unpack them (Facebook marketplace is a great way to obtain and release moving boxes!). The rest of the waste is still significant.

Gatsby is patiently waiting for me to empty this box so he can play in it.

I suppose I have to weigh that against the environmental benefit of buying organic produce, and not driving one’s car to the store. A truck that delivers to many homes is more efficient. In addition, Misfits says they create less waste due to their direct relationship with suppliers.

Le sigh. This stuff is complicated, innit?

What I Like About Misfits

I do most of my shopping with the Instacart app for Aldi. There are some things, however, that Aldi doesn’t offer, or doesn’t have consistently, that Misfits does. Also, Instacart shoppers sometimes bring me moldy or otherwise unacceptable produce. (Don’t worry, Instacart always refunds me for that when I request it!) Misfits offers consistently high-quality produce that’s in season.

Misfits market review: the TL;DR

Misfits offers convenient organic grocery delivery at great prices
Their site is easy to use and the selection is good without being overwhelming
Misfits has consistently high-quality, seasonal produce
The orders come with a lot of packaging, which is a deal-breaker for me

In conclusion, I likely won’t be changing my shopping habits drastically anytime soon. Aldi still consistently offers the lowest prices, even with the Instacart upcharge.

A note about our upcoming move: I’ll be less than a mile away from Aldi, which is located on the main road I’ll have to access to go literally anywhere. So I’ll likely stop using Instacart altogether, eliminating the questionable produce picks and leading to more grocery savings.
