A couple of weeks ago I began feeling that tell-tale scratchy throat that usually signals an impending virus, so I started swallowing a half teaspoon of raw chopped garlic once a day, as well as upping my probiotics dose. It never developed into anything more.
Then my kids started getting sick.
I’ve been lax about insisting on the daily dose of fermented cod liver oil I used to have my kids take during the winter.
We’ve had, um, a lot going on. But I’ve been taking my FCLO/butter oil capsules faithfully for months because I wanted to stay healthy and avoid an infection after my water broke.
It’s working.
I put on a huge pot of homemade chicken soup, with tons of garlic and, bien sur, homemade broth. The 4 year old had a fever and runny nose for a couple of days, then the 2 year old, then the 9 year old developed a croupy cough at night. A humidifier running in her room helped tremendously.
During the plague I kept “thieves” blend going in my NOW atomizer. Everyone took raw garlic. (I find if I down it with raw milk without chewing, it doesn’t give me garlic breath or burps.) There were endless cups of tea with honey to soothe raw throats, and freshly squeezed OJ for extra Vitamin C.
I got a sample of Boogie Wipes saline nasal spray and love it. The saline spray is free of preservatives (benzylkonium chloride is something I want to avoid). The spray nozzle operates sort of like a neti pot, but easier and less intimidating for younger children.
I’m really scared to get sick because then I won’t be able to visit my baby in the NICU! Thankfully my home care measures, along with more strict hand washing routines, seem to be working.
I’m SO thankful that we got the yearly virus over with before our newest member comes home from the hospital!
How are you staying well (or caring for sick kiddos) this season?
(p.s. I received a sample of Boogie Mist to facilitate this review, and there are affiliate links in this post. Thanks for reading my blog!)
Sleeping in Daniel’s room right now so I can administer breathing treatments as needed.
How has he been faring this flu/RSV season?
He has actually been doing pretty well. (I think a large part of it is that we’re in an area where the air is better so we’re not having all the issues we had the last three years.) I didn’t have to do any breathing treatments last night so I’m feeling OK about things right now. We think the current cough is due to allergies so we’ve been doing stuff according to that protocol and we’ll hit up the pediatrician for steroids if we need them.
Three out of the four adults in the house have respiratory crud at the moment. My father-in-law (terminally ill with cancer) probably got his from someone on a plane. My mother-in-law has been fighting bronchitis for three weeks (the cough is all that is lingering at the moment) and I’m having allergy issues due to weather changes. My husband is healthy thankfully.
